The first fiscal year for OVPN

David Wibergh, about Announcements

The first fiscal year for OVPN is coming to an end and has greatly exceeded our expectations. Over 18,000 people have tested out OVPN so far this year, whereof about 4,600 have become paying customers.

OVPN has anonymized and encrypted approximately 13,000,000 GB of traffic in total. We have 16 servers in Sweden, meaning that we have one of the largest infrastructures for VPN services in Sweden.

We’ve had exciting projects that were released during the month of December, one of them being the development and release of our own VPN client. We’ve also reprogrammed the website and opened up the pre-ordering of our brand-new and enhanced OVPNbox. We have gone from working from home to having an office in central Stockholm, and we will shortly start to increase our staff in order to help develop our services further.

The time has come for OVPN to take on bigger markets and provide international customers with the same security that we’ve offered to our Swedish customers so far. We’ve worked day and night the last couple of months in order to find datacenters and Internet providers that can give us the resources we need. After long negotiations, we have finally landed on the decision to place our servers in Frankfurt, Germany, in February of 2016.

We chose Frankfurt because it’s one of the biggest hubs for internet connectivity in Europe. By placing our servers there, we will be able to provide a great connection to the majority of Internet providers. Furthermore, we’ve chosen Cogent as our Internet provider in Germany, and we will soon connect to DE-CIX in order to peer traffic.

We are leasing half a rack cabinet (21 height units) from Interxion. To start with, we will place a similar blade system to the one deployed in Stockholm last week. All of these servers will be connected with a 10 Gbit/s link, and we have acquired 254 IPv4 addresses and a couple of billion IPv6 addresses. Along with a growing demand, we will continue to deploy blade systems in order to streamline the space that is available to us.

Our goal for 2016 is to place servers in three different countries, whereof at least two will be located in Europe. Internationally, we will continue in the same direction as before, meaning we’ll never make compromises when handling our customers’ integrity and security. As we are obtaining all the hardware needed ourselves, as well as making sure that the data centers and Internet service provider maintain a satisfying level of security, it will result in a high investment cost per data center.

In order to secure the physical security and the performance that we are known for, the investment will end up being about €20,000 per datacenter. For us, it is more important to have a high level of security and performance than to have a single server in every country, which is something that other VPN providers don’t seem to agree on.

I personally want to thank everyone who has chosen OVPN as their VPN provider and helped making this year-long journey possible. We are looking forward with excitement to the launch of the improvements we have worked so hard on and couldn’t be happier about taking OVPN internationally.
